British funnyman and Daily Show veteran John Oliver will host his own Sunday night HBO comedy show

Sometimes things don’t go exactly as planned, like when HBO asked John Oliver to host his own talk show that will “take a satirical look at the week in news, politics and current events.” They never actually foresaw a comedy talk show on their network but it was due to Oliver’s famous Daily Show takeover while John Stewart was in production for his latest film that HBO knew it was destiny.

“I’m incredibly excited to be joining HBO, especially as I presume this means I get free HBO now. I want to thank Comedy Central, and everyone at the Daily Show for the best seven and a half years of my life,” Oliver said in a statement on Thursday. “But most of all, I’d like to thank Jon Stewart. He taught me everything I know. In fact, if I fail in the future, it’s entirely his fault,” Oliver said.

For those of you who recognize Oliver from not only the Daily Show but his many appearances on Community as the drunken psychology professor Ian Duncan (along with his longevity in the stand up comedy scene including hosting the New York Stand Up Show on Comedy Central), you know this is the perfect fit and it will be an absolute hit.

No set dates or times are known, but the show will take a slot in the Sunday evening spot.
