A semi-unbiased review of Bangerz

“Catwalk, slick talk, flirting with the big dog”

OK whatever, I don’t care what anyone says: I love Bangerz. In fact, it’s been one week and I still haven’t stopped listening to the new Miley. I give it at least a month until I move on (but inevitably come back to) the 4th album from the racy Miss Cyrus. And say what you will about her; try and deny the fact you listened to her summer hit “We Can’t Stop” fifteen hundred times in your car—over, and over. But I know you know you love it.

Bangerz starts off slow with, “Adore You”: a love song that after 4 minutes or so turns into the much-loved “We Can’t Stop”. Then all of the sudden this undeniably catchy beat starts, track 3 “SMS (Bangerz)”; it’s my favorite song on the album for two reasons: 1) Britney Spears comes in out of nowhere and I absolutely love it, and 2) there’s this robot guy chiming in every so often, “I can strut that, strut that, strut that stuff, bangerz! Bangerz!”

Threads of the slowed down beats are in and out: “My Darlin'” feat. Future, is probably my favorite of them. And of course, “I CAME IN LIKE A WRECKKKKKING BALL/ I NEVER HIT SO HARD IN LOVE/ ALL I WANTED WAS TO BREAK YOUR WALLS/ ALL YOU EVER DID WAS BREAK ME / YEAH YOU WRECK ME”—the second single “Wrecking Ball” is always a good one (it’s still playing in the back of my head.)

“Love, Money, Party” is my 2nd favorite mainly because again Cyrus somehow comes up with another addicting beat/riff: “Money ain’t nothing/ money can’t buy you love/ I don’t give a damn if he’s sitting on a crib/ money ain’t nothing /after that right now/ what about the real and the way you feel?” Also: BIG SEAN poppin’ thru spitting a little somethin’. “My girl and watch both coordinate/ they both got that gorgeous face”—it doesn’t really get much better, you guys.

Of course, there’s still more that I can’t really begin to describe in words (just dance movies). “FU” has my favorite intro and breakdown—“I got two, ooh, ooh letters for you: one of them’s F, and the other one’s U/ SMH I’m pressing send on you”—with a familiar voice French Montana rapping.

Overall Bangerz is a lot of fun and could soundtrack virtually any workout (or party, or car ride, or anything). Listening to it in full about 10 or 15 times now, I honestly forgave Cyrus for any publicity stunts she’s been pulling the past few months, because plain and simple: I genuinely like her songs.
